Deep within himself, below any realm of consciousness, Sonre had come to despise his neighbor Haru. Sonre’s farm was perched high near the top of the hill where sunlight first glanced on the countryside. On rainy days, the rain blew the soil downward sending debris into whirling rings to where Haru lived. On those days, Sonre watched anxiously as rich, chocolate water swept from the hill to fertilize the valley. It had been Sonre’s effort that had made the land so rich. Cow dung had been allowed to putrefy before dead fish were planted with each seed. It had been Sonre who had toiled in the hot sun for weeks, planting, fertilizing, and sowing. It had been Haru that had rested on his cot with little effort.
