Through the automobile window, Hattie could see the rich, rolling land and sprouting rows of corn. She resolved not to
reflect on her current situation, instead she decided to accept the new life that awaited her. The house was far away. All of her children had been raised there. The oak that sat on the property and extended branch fingers into the sky was planted by her son Abner when he was a boy.
