“I can’t believe this! You are not going to accept my gift?” Sherida asked as she held the sparkling crystal vase in her
mother’s direction.
“I can’t take something like that,” said Sherida’s mother as she adjusted the fuzzy afghan blanket on her couch. The
couch had been in the family for as long as Sherida could remember.
Sherida adjusted her gold bracelets. The crystal vase shimmered like a disco ball as the bracelets click clacked against
it.
“You have always been the type to put on airs! I am not that type of person,” protested her mother.
“That’s the last time-” Sherida stopped in mid speech.
“No finish. That is the last time that you will what?” Her mother stood and placed her hands on her hips. “You forgot
where you came from. No downtown job will ever take away your true heritage.”
