Sometimes the polynomials aren't in Standard Form (descending order from highest to lowest exponents). When this happens, you can either rewrite each polynomials in order before combining like terms, or just be REALLY careful when adding to make sure that you are combining like terms (same base, same exponent).

How do you feel about adding polynomials when the terms aren't in order?

Great! I can even do the problems without rewriting them.

Pretty good. I like to rewrite them in order first.

Not too bad. I mess up sometimes when there's a minus sign.

Not very well. I think I need a peer tutor.
